No dead wrong. You haven't seen how mine is set up. If I followed your instructions, I'd have to break some parts. That's just stupid, imo. Your also in a vert. The speaker's can be accessed with just the covers off. It is a tight fit, but it can be done.

yea Jason's right on the vert the covers don't come off like that. they have little plastic tips on them that you have to bust to get the cover off.
you can however take the panels out without taking the seat apart at all. i did my whole project with the seats in.

I know when i replaced my liftback's rear speakers, one was already broken, but the other one i just took a very big standard screwdriver, and slowly pried my way around, and it came off w/o breaking anything.

I know this for fact, as I've tried. hmm i wonder if there is a slight difference between the 87 and 88 cuz it was pretty easy. ok i'll try to explain using an old picture of my car. ok so you take out that top screw, take off the 10mm bolt hiding next to the seat. then slide off the trim piece that is dotted red. fold down the back seat and you should be able to shimy the thing out pretty easily from there. i did like 99% of the work with everything unscrewed but still in the car

Ah.. well, see, my seat doesn't fold down anymore. the mechanism sort of fell apart inside the seat.
