My 1989 GT-S Liftback rear speakers have blown. They were making a weird sound that made me think that there was something rattling around inside the speaker so I remove the rear speaker. In the grill above protecting the speaker it says "LiveSound" and has a little logo. The speakers are encased in a black (plastic?) box that bolts to the chasis. As it turns out the speaker had just died. I was wondering what dimensions these speakers are so I could grab a pair off ebay or something to replace them. If you reply to this please try and dum-down your answers as I don't know anything about car audio. All I know is what sounds bad and that speaker really sounds like it needs to be replaced....

Craig They are technically a 4T sized speaker. A 4 inch speaker will bolt right in, and the boxes/covers can still be used.

Thanks for the fast reply Tom. How good would a replacement 4T be? It seems to me like it is a small speaker....

I'll get some shots of my speakers up tonight, they will take 3.5", or 4". I had some 4" laying around, and they fit perfectly in there, sound real good too. I'm just trying to get 4" up front, and it's not working the way i hoped it would.

Cool thanks man. What kind of speakers did you put in back? How big are the front speakers usually?

Yes. 4T is a very hard speaker size to find. 4 inch bolts right in. I have some 4 inch Pioneers as my back speakers. They sound good for the mids and highs, but a sub would really help my lacking bass.

I agree. Got a pair of Infinity Reference 3.5" in the front and they sound excellent. I have a set of donated Alpine 4" in the rear which sound decent. It is impossible to get good low end out of speakers that small though. I solved the problem with a 10" SAS Bazooka purchased from a friend for $20 being driven by a Lanzar Heritage 600W amp.

Okay.. a 4T speaker is a normal 4" speaker with a different mounting design.. it's no smaller than a standard 4" speaker.
The only problem you may have with a 4" in a 4T spot, is that you might have to snip some of the metal away to make it fit right. I know I had to when I put 4" up front.

Yup, Infinities are expensive. Aftermarket 4" do sound a whole lot better than the stock stuff, but they can't handle bass very well. Mids and highs, hell yeah. Lows? Nope. I bought a pair of Pioneer 4" for my GT. They were like $42 for the pair at Circuit City and they bolted right in. They dont sound all that bad either.

I don't know about buying speakers off ebay, and why go with the same sizes? Front can be upgraded to 4" easy, the box has the hole already. Back can be extended to 5.25"(what I did), but it is a pain in the ass carving out an extra 1.25" off arround the rim of the box, but well worth it. And, yes, the cover does still fit without touching the speaker. 5.25" is the biggest possible to fit in that box, any bigger will be bigger than the diameter of the box. I just took pictures, i'll post them later. There is a possibility that a 4" speaker will produce more base, but than you'll have to look into the actual frequency response and range of the speakers, but more frequencies=higher price(most of the time)=better sound, but still, go bigger if you want more bass, also get a head unit with a eq(not 3 band) and add subs, but that's not too cheap. I went with 4" front, 5.25"back and it sounds great, even without the 2 12"subs. But i also got nice pioneers, and they're not that cheap.
