waht the hell do all the acronims mean?
tvis = toyota variabul induction system. or if you whant it to sound cooler (twin vortex induction system)
tvis is moust cominly found on the ist gen 3sge and the 4age in bouth motoers the tvis blocks off one of the 8 inkate runers. having one of the runners blocked off keeps the air flow volocity hige so you will still have some low end tork. but in the hige rpm all 8 runers are open to feed the clylinder the moust air posibule and since the rpm is hige then the intake volocity is hige. the 86-89 celica GTS has this type of induction system and the mr2/ corola gts
ok.. now with each generation the air flow gets more advanced. and so do the volocity dynamics.
AIR the stuff you breath is reley cool. moust pepol think air is waitless. not so at hige volocity air starts to take on allmoust water like property in terms of air flow. and it has a huge potantil kinetic enargey. (think huricane) (the info in this artical might go past my dislxsic wrighting skills plees bare with me) with that in mind think of your air flow in tearms of water. (water that can be compresed that is) in a turbo charger that fan forces air in the the cylinder to give it more power. (simplifed) but in an all motoer set up we relighe on this kenikic energey of air induction.
ok TTPVIS this is my favorit induction system. I dont know waht the real name is but I call is TOYOTA TWIN PLEUM VARIABUL INDUCTION SYSTEM. in low rpm the two intake plunums are open. the slow moving air from the 1ts plenum are drawn in the runers unevanley. and then the air moves to the second plenum whear it get redistributer eveanley to the rest of the runers and then in to the cylinders. this all so keeps the air lovlocity hige at low rpm. in hige rpm the second plenum closes off. and the air in the 1ts planum is eveanley distarbuted in to the cylinders. this makes for a grater mid to hige range of power. but you have NO low power at all. the jdm 90-98 celica and mr2 have this set up.
VVTLI veriabul valve timing lift inteligance. (think vteck) two sets of cam shaft lobs are on one cam shaft. a low rpm set and a hige rpm set. the low rpm set has a sort duration and lift. this keeps the port volicity hige. the higer rpm cam has a long duration and lift. in the long duration the lalve stays open longer. this alows more air in the cylinder. (duh yah I know) the reason this gives you more power is that the air still has a lot of kinetic enargey. the piston is on its way back up and the valve is still open. this way the air is still pushing its self in to the cylinder resulting in more air= more power.
this is true for all NA set ups. keep the port volocity hige and more air will cram its self in to the cylinder. thats why guys with big cam shafts have a bad idle or no low to mid power.
