For those of you who work on your own ST-162's, what workshop manual do you use or consider the best? 1. Toyota factory manual - how much do these cost? 2. Haynes? personally I think these suck for the most part. and... 3. Chiltons?
Thanks in advance.

If the Haynes manual is adequate for the ST-162 then I will definitely consider it since Haynes tend to be the cheapest.
In my experience, I have found them to be lacking or inaccurate. For my wife’s Audi, many topics and info just wasn’t there. For my AE86 (Corolla GT-S), most of the electrical data and wiring diagrams were non-existent. For a Honda engine I worked on years ago, the head bolts were supposed to be “torque to yield”, yet Hayne’s specified 65 lb. ft. which was very misleading. OTOH, the AW11 MR2 Haynes manual was quite good.

I've found both the Haynes and Chiltons Celica manuals to be a cluster fu*k of information. Do your self a favor and get the Toyota manual(s). If you have a '86 or a '87 your kind of in luck cause these years can be bought quite cheaply.(Toyota put out an updated manual for every production year) Their seems to be a premium on the '88 and '89 versions probably due to busted ass All-Trac owners(like me ) needing them. Your best bet to get one of these is teh E-bay. search.ebay.ca/celica_Manuals-Literature_W0QQcatrefZC12QQfromZR6QQfromZR9QQfrppZ50QQsacatZ6029QQsalicZQ2d15

I've used the Haynes for a 92 civic, 89 civic, 96 neon and my celica.
I had a Haynes AND Chilton for my Blazer... the chiltons confused the SHIT outta me.. I'd rather stick w/ Haynes.. easy to read and eaiser to find.

I would agree that both chilton and haynes suck, but for the money I personally found the chilton better (I own both, but alas no BGB).

One more thing, I got a haynes manual with my MR2 and guess what, I looked through the whole book and couldn't find the trouble codes anywhere. That piece of info should be there above all else.

I just contacted my local Toyota dealer, and they say they no longer sell shop manuals. The service guys apparently use electronic manuals now but they're not on CD so they can't sell them.
Looks like I will be buying a Haynes.
Added later: I have discovered the BGB at celicatech.com (registration required) and there is a wealth of information there!
