Hi there. I've got a 88 Celica ST with a 3S-FE engine, and I'm not very proud of the power my car has. It comes with 115 HP stock, and I really want more. I've heard about people swapping for a 3S-GE, but I've also heard of people swapping for a 5S-FE. If I wanted to keep my car smog-passable (I live in California), what kind of upgrades can I make to get more HP and still keep it street-legal? (Besides an aftermarket intake and a performance exhaust).
From what I've read, the 5S-FE engine is only about 10 HP more then the 3S-FE, but you can do more to it. If I were to get my engine rebuilt, and have it port-polished and bored, would that be better? Would it be street legal? Thanks guys.

Your best bet all around is the 3SGE swap, just find you a good engine, tranny, ECU, and harness. Like that you've got the power in the lightest Celica chassis possible, oughta be a screamer. Add a good performance clutch and LSD, man what a package.

Hey, thanks for the very quick reply. About how much would you think that would cost? I know the JDM engines are pricy, and I'm not even sure if they'd be smog passable. Also, one more question: the ST series has the lightest chasis? Thanks again racerb, really helps out much :-). Take care.
Edit: What's an LSD? :-P

an lsd is short for limited slip differintial. Have you ever seen cars burn out with only one tire smoking, that is due to no lsd. When you put it in, you get traction to both wheels for better takeoffs and handling.

no thats not due to no LSD, its due to the fact that our cars have 100 HP lol, and the only way they feel strong is when they burn 1 tire LOL , anyways i live in california and you can swap for a GE and u will be able to pass smog, if and when you get youe GE swap ive got a GE head thats been done up, never installed its so sweet, go for the GE 135 HP and looks good!!!

Hey, wait....I just read on www.toysport.com/catalog/3sgt_Conversions.htm that it would be possible to swap the 3S-FE engine in my ST with a 3S-GTE engine. Wouldn't it be much better to do that? About 60 more HP then the 3S-GE engine right? Are there any problems I would run into? Also, could you guys post up some links to the 1st and 2nd gen 3S-GE and 3S-GTE engines that would be legal to put in my car? I'm having a bit of a hard time trying to find them and the transmission. Thanks again.

Hey I've found 3SGEs for as little as $400 US, just cost you about as much to ship the damn thing. If I were you I'd start checking junk yards, theres got to be a couple GTSs around that got creamed from the rear, so the engines in tacked. If you can find one of these, just remove all the parts I listed earlier. I found one just the other day, only one problem, someone had already scavenged the head. Hell my wife just got me another ECU from Pick-A-Part, only gave $35 with garanty.

The GTE engines, at least the 2nd gen, puts out ~200hp stock. Since you are in Cali, I'm not sure, but you might be able to get it past smog. I'm in AZ, so... I can just go up north and register my car up there, no emmisions. I'm with everyone else, hit up the junkyards, find a 3sge engine... and use that. Now if you can find an Alltrac, your set there also.. that has the 3sGTE in it.. And since its in a yard in Cali.. It's prolly cali emmison safe

Hey guys a limited slip is just that limited, most only work at higher RPM ranges, usually around 3500 before they kick in. This is why we frontwheel drive roadracers, leftfoot brake to keep the power on through the turns.

actually.....once the main drive wheel loses enough traction or for a certian period of time it will go ahead and break the other wheel lose to aid the other one in regaining traction. I use lucas oil friction modifier in my rear end on the 85 to keep her working.
