Well, I have a 87 GT 3sfe manual gearbox, and planning to put a 89 3sge in. However, i'm not sure if the transmission is the same. I know that the starter is in a different place. I saw a DIY article abou putting a GT-S tranny into a 3s/5s-fe, but this would be the oipposite, a GT tranny with 3s-ge... What are possible problems or disadvantages of using s53 from a GT with the 3sge?

The gearing on a 3sfe S-53 isn't as close.. but that's about it. It should be just fine. No need to worry.

starter is fine if you're using a 3sfe tranny on a 3sge.
the gearing isn't a big deal at all.. fe is geared more towards fuel economy and ge is geared more towards racing.

The gearing is the same through the first three gears. After that, 4th and 5th are futher apart than the GTS transmission. I'm putting an FE based transmission with my GE, as I want the economy.
As far as the starter, it wont be in the way. It'll even be better to be on the other side of the car. No heat soak, and it will probably last longer.

Hey man the actuall gears are the same, it's final drive gear that would mess you up. 3SGE has a 4.18 final drive, will the 3SFE has the 3.74 final, like black87 said, ones geared for power, the other for sporty economy. As for the starter issue, you'd be better off with it there, it isn't being distroyed by heat under the exhaust manifold. I've got a rare tranny with openings on both sides of the bellhousing, so I'm moving my starter when I get my race header. racerb

Hmm, I'm gonna go find out.

Ok, Having went to Toyota Celica Online, this is what I've got. The USDM GTS spec S-53 Transmission is: 1 - 3.28 2 - 2.04 3 - 1.32 4 - 1.03 5 - 0.82 Final - 4.1 The ST/GT spec S-53 is: 1 - 3.29 2 - 2.04 3 - 1.32 4 - 1.03 5 - 0.82 Final - 3.7 The USDM GT spec S-54 (6th Gen) is - 1 - 3.285 2 - 1.960 3 - 1.322 4 - 1.028 5 - 0.820 Final - 4.176 This is interesting. I have an S-54 going into my GTS. From the looks of it, the gearing seems to be VERY close to the same as the S-53 that I had. I need to get this thing on the road and get some tests done. If this is true, the S-54 transmission would be ideal for 4th gens that have synchros go out. This tranny has stronger synchros and what seems to be slightly more agressive gearing than that of the ST/GT S-53.

Hey Tom final drive makes a big difference, and tire diameter too, it changes gearing also. racerb

What does the FINAL number represent when talking about gear ratios?

Well it may sound strange but, the higher the number, the lower the gear. Most economy cars have relatively high gear like say 3.5, while a drag car might have as low as 6.8. The easiest way to look at it is how many revolution the gear will turn to do the same amount of work. So if you have the 3.5, then your engine is not working near as hard, so better fuel economy, not as quick on take-off. Hope that makes it clear, if not then just know for performance, you want a higher gear number. racerb

The S-54 was mated to all 6th Generation Celica GT's. 94-99.
