EDIT: go to bottom of 2nd page. selling for 100 bucks now. this is the same as i can get from a junkyard, but i'd much rather it not go there. i swapped a jdm 2se that looked perfectly brand new, and it's running just fine, no problems with it. however, the other day i was driving and out of the blue i'm having transmission trouble. it shifts fine with the engine off, but sometimes hits a "wall" trying to shift into 1st or 2nd at a standstill. usually shifts to other gears fine after moving. (sometimes not perfect tho) i had never had problems with grinding synchros or anything so i don't really know what it is. i'm kinda frustrated, and i don't feel like yanking the tranny to either replace it or fix something. i also don't feel like spending 400 or so more dollars to have someone check it out. i spent 450 for the engine shipped. i'll take the same for the whole car. not an abundance of good parts, but if you have a spare tranny, or have time to fix it yourself, it's not a bad deal for a winter beater. tires are mastercraft avenger gt, and have most of the tread left. brakes are new. body has a good bit of rust, front fenders are both bad. windshield is cracked. comes with some spare parts (o2 sensors, maf sensor, center driveshaft, and some alternators that need rebuilt if you want them) www.cardomain.com/id/wally_cleaver should have some pics leonhart59@hotmail.com

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago.. replaced the clutch, and voila. all fixed.

unfortunately i don't have the time to do it myself, and to have it done will be about 400 dollars... it sucks, because i'm a diy person on car repair, but at this time...i don't have time seems strange that it shifts ok in other gears tho...i would think it'd be straight bad all around if the disc was broken? but you've had the experience, so i'm not arguing...just saying why i didn't really expect it i dunno....may fix it myself if i can FIND time, and find a cheap clutch online. where's a cheap place to get a clutch? i remember the clutch i bought for my 87 corolla gt-s i got at clutchcity.com for like 88 bucks plus shipping...i'll have to check it out. -checked...they don't list the 2se...anyone know if 3sfe and 2se clutches are the same/interchangeable? ok, well partsamerica.com has the same part number for 3sfe and 2se, so i'm guessing they do. figured they did. anyway, i found just the disc for sale on ebay...new. think i can just replace the disc? or would i prolly need to do the pressure plate and release bearing or whatever? cuz the disc is about 20 bucks...the whole set is 111 on clutchcityonline.com thanks

Before you go out and spend the cash, let me describe my experiences so you can get a feel for what I'm talking about.
With the engine off: I could shfit into any gear just fine.. easily. Just as it normally would. No problems anywhere at all.
With the engine on: I had to start the car with it in gear, or I would not have a gear to use. When the engine was running, I could not shift into any gear without speed shifting. I could shift into neutral just fine, but that was it.. once I was in neutral, I was screwed unless I wanted to speed shift, or turn off the engine and start again with it in gear.
It was a royal PITA, and we figured out that the clutch disc had broken and simply was not releasing the engagement.
In your case, after reading your second post, it sounds like it could be something more complicated than that since the symptoms are only expressed when shfiting between into 1st or 2nd gear.. which is a PITA for you, since those are the most difficult gears to get to on teh tranny.. a shame it's not just fifth.. heh.
I think I would have it checked out first, and then go from there. I know Toyota will do a full look-over for Anything and everything that's wrong for about $40US. Really helpful if you're trying to restore your car back to stock, but I'm not sure if it'd be worth it to you in this case when a tranny shop could check it out, and give you a free analysis + estimate in hopes of gaining your business.
After you find out what's wrong, you can go from there as to what to do about it. If they say you need a rebuild, I'd just get a salvaged tranny from the bone yards. I got one for about $200 about a year ago.
Anyway, good luck with this. I hate tranny work. I much prefer engine diagnostics.

i will sell it if i can get that price so i don't lose more money. the engine i would say has 35k or less on it. the place i bought it from estimated 30-35k, and actually it looked less than that...really it looked almost brand new. but it's definately LOW.
as far as the problems...yes, it's much like that, though i'll have to doubel check on the other gears...i usually can get them in, but they aren't really easy as i recall...just easier than 1st and 2nd...
thanks

i went out yesterday to try it.
it's a wall between every gear except reverse which it still doesn't go in, it makes a high pitched grinding when you go into it. but start it in the gear and then you're ok (powershifting after that)
so anyway, yeah, i'm guessing it's the clutch disc.
also, forgot, the car has a radiator that has about 1k miles on it...perfect shape. cost me about 120 bucks when i got it. also have some ngk wires for it that are brand new, they were about 30 some dollars. also can have the jdm distributer, it had different wiring than mine, so i swapped them, but it's included if you want it. also a power steering pump that looks brand new that came with the engine. very good condition pump. the engine/radiator and extra parts alone are worth more than my asking price.
open to offers.
thanks

If the body was straight, I'd pick it up for the asking price. I'm close too.

i'm about 1 hour 20 minutes east of columbus, about 2 or 2 1/2 hours from pittsburgh. the body is straight....just kinda rusty the rust on the body could be grinded off i think on the rear wheelwells. i'd just go with new doors (not that these are that terrible, but i can buy a set for 100 bucks that are red like these, with manual windows, and locks like this has) and replace the front fenders and it wouldn't be very rusty anymore. one of the fenders is at my junkyard for like 40 or 50 bucks. that's about 150 dollars to get the rust mostly down to one fender, and some stuff you can fix (no holes through anything except the front fenders) if that tickles you interest, i can drop the price a bit, and if you want the parts, we could go up to the junkyard and pull the stuff. i can also give the old 2se if someone wants it. it's pretty nasty tho. i spose it'd be good for manifolds, and rebuilding the block if someone wanted to do that for some reason anyway...also has a very new toyota shift boot....now i KNOW you all want it ;D
