Have you pulled your existing deck out and looked at the plugs behind the deck?
When adding an aftermarket deck, the smart people buy a harness adaptor that plugs into the cars existing harness. IMO, that's where it's unplugged.
I would not run it off the battery, as that's just asking for more wiring problems.
BTW, Welcome to the site.

first, you should go to a auto parts store and get a wiring adaptor that would allow the deck to be connected using the factory harness. you should also get a single din adaptor so the hu will fit perfectly. here's 2 links to the parts, but any autoparts store will have them. I'd recomend trying the adaptor before geheto wiring off of the battery, as that will not turn off when the car is off, it will constantly have power, and chances are the factory one went bad and is just disconected form the harness. wiring harnesshead unit mounting kitfor an amp, i recomend sony, as they are good quality and not to pricy. i'd also recomend taking this to a shop for instalation, as if you buy the kit it is roughly $50-$90, and most shops(not best buy or circuit city) will install using the same wires for arround $60 total. a shop will also install the headunit for arround $50, and they'll take care of your wiring problem if you don't feel up to it.

that'd be your best bet, unless you do what i did and manually figure out what each wire is for...

thats what i did too! it was a pain. when i bought the car, the power was gheto wired from my cigarret(bad sp) lighter, which i have yet to reconnect. the back speakers were disconnectedand the front were blown to hell. one wiring harness was cut, the other still in tact. the edge of the center console was shaved off to gheto fit a pos tape player.

ok...lets look at the facts
the wires going to the stereo are unhooked
where could he have unhooked it
it was not at the back of the stereo deck itself i checked that everything was pluged in right
do the wires eventually go to a fuse box?
or should i rip out the climate control box and look behind there?
my car manual dosent go into detail about this...

i'd recomend following the wires back, taking out the climate control won't help anything, i rewired the system without even touching that. check under the hood at the fuses, see if he might have pulled out the fuse. i'll check back a little later, the bell's about to ring so i cant tell you anymore(im at school).
