I'm about to set to painting my air con vents, the 4 on the dash face and the 2 up on top of the dash. I've had a little poke and prod but cant figure out how they come off, can anyone set me in the right direction

Here's a pic of the center vent to give you an idea of screw holes? Not too sure about the other ones.

ya they all unscrew from the backside of the dash. I had to pull the entire dash forward about a foot so I could reach in behind them and unscrew the stupid little buggers. Real PITA. Good luck though, it looks real good once its done oh yeah the center one has the 3 screws, the two side ones have one screw each believe and the upper ones on either side just pop off, oh wait there is a little tab so don't just pop them off you have to get at them from the backside as well. Don't pry on any of them, you have to get at each one from the back. I learned this the hard way the first time. Lucky I had aparts car and I took them all out right and painted them then I knew how they went and it wasn't easy.

dash removal is a lot of work. You have to pull everything around the shifter and back to the armrest first, then the glove box and that brace that it mounts to, then the kickpanels, under the steering column and lastly the shroud around the stereo. Then pull the gauge cluster and I don't remember but I think its easier if you drop the steering column (don't take it completely out just undo the 4 bolts and drop it to the ground, you'll hafta take the shroud out from around there too). hint: its easier to get in there if you take the front seats out Then start to work on the dash. Countless screws and bolts and then once you get all those, wiggle the dash for an hour, swear a little, and then crawl under there and find the rest. It'll eventually come out. I don't suggest pulling it right out because that would involve unplugging everything and you'd never get it back in so just pull it all forward enough to reach in behind and unscrew those stupid little vents. And then swear some more because you broke some little tab. When you are ready to put the dash back in, wiggle and shuffle and swear some more and then finally resort to kicking it until you can get one screw in, then kick it some more and try to get the rest in. Then give up and pound a couple self-tapping screws through some inconspicuous yet key structural piece just so it stays in place and doesn't rattle. Now simply put all the shrouds and panels and screws back in. I guarantee you will have at least six screws left over, don't worry about them just put them in the ashtray, you'll find a use for them later. Aaaaand your done no seriously, these are step by step instructions, even if you don't follow them very carefully they will work themselves into existence.

yeah, he's got it pretty much in one... it is a slut of an idea
thats the one thing i give bloody levins and truenos etc, their vents just pop out
we'v got the whole dash out and in bits from my mates celica that he's redoing the interior on, the wiring isnt actually all that hard if u wanna take it righ out but we did it without dropping the steering column...

On mine, we just placed a jackstand under the steering column to keep it from falling down.
The trick to getting the dash out, is to remove it from the passenger side, over the steering wheel. It's almost impossible to get it in and out through the driver's side. Tilt it forward, over the steering wheel, then rotate it out over the wheel through the passenger door. You will really need two people.

Why couldn't you just mask around them and paint them while they're still in the dash?

Why couldn't you just mask around them and paint them while they're still in the dash? no kidding man....taking the entire dash out just to paint the vents sounds like a major waste of time and bullshit on toyota's part for designing our cars like that.
