I installed the starter fix on my 87 GT-S to the right of the exhaust manifold, on top of the transmission. I affixed the relay to a bracket used to tie down the wiring to the starter.
I put the wires from the starter and to the battery in plastic wire looms, and the wire looms have partially melted/deformed, probably from the heat of the EGR pipe, which is about 3-4 inches away. The wiring itself and the relay look okay at the moment, but I am concerned about the excess heat. I don't want to melt the inside of the relay, lol.
Any ideas? The immediate area looks like it is all subject to high temps.
Some thoughts.... use fabric insulating tubes on the wire; wrap something around the EGR pipe in that area; find a way to shield the relay area....

I found a manufacturer of heat-protection products: Thermo-Tec (www.thermotec.com).
I see some good products there... heat-resistant wire sleeves, adhesive-backed heat barrier, etc.
But I'm still curious to know if and how anyone else has dealt with this.

I just didn't put the relay that close to the manifold, mine is zap-strapped right down by the tranny
