My 86ST's Muffler fell onto the road completely rusted through - a bloke off ebay is selling a muffler from a 3s-ge 4th gen celica - will it fit? Looks pretty simple - and on the surface looks like it should work fine - but, 1. do the flanges match up? 2. is there enough room? 3. performance? would like some confirmation before I make the drive to go and purchase it. thanks to anyone with info

Yup. Got the all-trac stock on my GT. I did it because I have a pressure box on the intake feed from the wheel well, ported in and out no cat, no EGR.
I got the muffler before all of the mods I had planed on. Made a bit of diff. but not much. I had the head milled and cleaned and I put new head bolts in. That, after a week of tuning, with all the others added up to way more than I would have gussed. So I'm glad I have a little more release. If yur going to mod the engin I'd say do it.

If you're going to mod the engine, get a better muffler than stock anything. It's still the typical muffler design.. it just breathes a tad easier, but it's nothing significant. If you intend to keep it stock, Then yeah, I'd go that route since it's a stock muffler, and will retain stock appearances. If you just want a cheap replacement, get a cheap-o performance muffler from an autoparts store (I'm talking $20 here) and have a shop install it. Total should be around $60US for parts and installation combined.
If it's performance you're after, I'd start looking at names like A'pexi, Tanabe, HKS, and the like... but I'd go full exhaust and not just the muffler. Just my $.02. -Jason

Thanks for the replies. Just to clarify - My main concern is to keep the car on the road and registerable.
My only performace criteria is that it should not be worse than the original ST muffler! So, if the price is right, I think I will go ahead and buy the 3s-ge muffler (btw: it's only the muffler - not the resonator and other piping etc.).

I got the cheapo "Cherry Bomb Turbo II" muffler at an autoparts store for close to $20.. and I spent no more than $5 in parts to install it myself. muffler replacement was less than $30.. no welder required.
