right now, the family doesn't want to invest $$ into the celica, and after spending some 300-400 bucks for changin the timing belt / water pump and other various things, the power steering pump decided to crap out on us.
Now, can I just pull the fuse for the power steering (assuming there is a fuse) ?? I know the belt would still be connected, but i'm wondering if there's goin to be any issues with that.
I just want to get rid of that horrible whining noise it makes ... trust me, it's really really loud. The power steering feels like its goin to give out any minute. I'd much rather disable it for now and then replace it later down the road.
At the end of the summer we may consider parting it out or just donating it. .. such a good car, but with about 195k on the odo, dunno how much longer it'll survive.
Thanks alot guys.

same exact thing happened to me last year. All you gots to do is cut the belt off and BAM its fixed by the way..there is no fuse for the power steering and it will be a slight work out for the 1st week or so until your arms adjust to it ;D

thanks.
I did some research and found something interesting.
I know when I went out to buy PS fluid for my maxima, I found out there are different kinds. I know i needed Dextron III but had accidentally bought one specifically for GM/Chrysler cars and it was a different color.
I know the mechanic filled it up at one point and it may have been the wrong kind.
When I run the car and then turn it off and check the PS fluid in the resevoir, it was foaming.
I searched on google and found that foaming fluid will cause squeeling .. i need to purge the system and replace it with Dextron fluid, right?
I have mobil1 synthetic Dextron fluid.
Whats the best way to get rid of the fluid? I usually use a turkey bastor on my maxima, but the design of the celica resevoir doesn't allow the bastor inside. Maybe siphon it out?
thanks.

alright, i pumped the fluid and flushed it out twice by using a turkey bastor / pipe in teh resevoir.
The fluid that came out was dark yellow color ... dextron is supposed to be red, right?
well i pumped it out and filled it with dextron twice.
Same problem remains. I notice that when i turn the wheel all the way to the left or right a couple times, it starts to overfill. when i look in the resevoir, there's air gettin in there for sure cuz it's bubbling like crazy.
Howver, i never noticed any leak otherwise.
what's goin on? what to check? the hoses seem to be secured.

power steering fluid does foam when the car is running. If its overflowing, then you have way to much fluid in there and you just have to drive it , till it stops. By the way, I thought you rack was leaking and you wanted to disable it?? Is it leaking or is it only whining?

your powersteering is not overfilled. The problem you have right now is called cavitation. You have air in your lines & in your rack. then when you add fluid that air tries to escape by pushing out through the resevoir therefor spilling PS fluid all over. You need to pour some fluid in start the car & turn the wheel all the way left & then all the way right about 10 times while pouring fluid in to basically bleed all the air out. You may have to repeat this procedure several times. IF that does not fix the problem then it sounds like your sealing ring in the PS pump is toast, you can buy a rebuild kit from toyota for about $30 US & rebuild the pump yourself. it's pretty easy, I've rebuilt 100's working at the toyo dealer.
