The altrnator burned out, and the car wouldn't turnover. We replaced the alternator, battery is all but new, and it still won't turnover. When turning the key on there are no lights on the dash besides the light to say the door is open. You can hear some things click and come on under the hood when the key is turned, but it's like the starter is getting no power. Any ideas? We've checked all of the fuses we could find, and eve tried a different battery we knew was good and stll nothing. We're out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like you need to do the starter mod, mine had the same symptoms (clicking under the hood) until i fixed it

Well, it's not the starter clicking, the only sound is the relays clicking over when they get power. The starter doesn't do anything at all. It's like power isn't getting to it. But things like the door chime, and the door ajar light comes on, and the headlights will open and come on, but the radio won't turn on, and none of the idiot lights, including the check engine light, won't come on when they key is turned. Seems like something is fried along the way somewhere, we just have no clue what it could be.

Did you check the fuse(s) connected to the positive battery wire?

Yes, they have a viewing window in the top of them, and neither is burned up. Like I said though, somethings get power (headlights, dome light) but most everything else doesn't.

Since it seems that power is getting to things, but nothing happens when you turn the key. our next theory is that the ignition switch went out. Advance Auto parts lists an ignition switch at $50, so that'll be the next try.

Hang on.. before that checked the *other* fuses/relays. After I did my headgasket replacement.... I unplugged all the relays and fuses in the passanger footwell.(by the door) I didn't hook them up, and it just clicked. I plugged them in.. it worked fine. Check those, and make sure they aren't dead. (

The only clicking we can hear is the relays clicking over when they get power, no noise from anything else. As far as the engine ground thing, how would we go about checking that?

i would recommend check again
I had a fuseable link blow right beside the battery for the starter, but it blew on one of the posts connecting to the wire, and NOT in the convenient little window for checking, so it APPEARED fine. So I got it towed all the way to Toyota for a fuseable link, for $110... ouch

I highly doubt it's one of those though, because the headlights still get power. It's all the important stuff that doesn't though. We'll look into it though. At this point, after examining the wiring diagram, I'm suspecting the ignition switch.
