So I'm considering a 3S-GTE for another project.. after doing a bit of reasearch on it.. (thanks Jeremy). My question is, I've heard that it's imposible to convert a JDM 3S-GTE to using an EGR valve.. So that leaves me with a few questions:
1) Is that true? Is it totally impossible to add EGR to a 2nd generation JDM 3S-GTE?
2) Anyone know how the visual inspection is actually performed? Can they even recognize the EGR system on a complex turbo car without the little hood diagram?

From what I've heard here in AZ and seen the techs doin, they look at the diagram.. then at the engine. Some of my vaccume hoses weren't even hooked up, and it still passed tie visual.

I also wonder what the legal requirement of an EGR really is.
I mean.. some really ancient cars literally have a tube from the header to the intake plenum, and thats it. I wonder if you couldn't "retrofit" one like that, make a diagram, and claim legal victory.

Well..
For when I emmsioned my celica, and also my Neon and Blazer when I had those..
Celica Raised hood, looked at sticker, looked at system, couldn't figure anything out, tried to fail me because it's a GTS hood, not GT, showed the engine code 3s-ge VS 3s-fe, and then just looked at the shit for 10 sec, and passed it.
Blazer Raised hood, didn't see a sticker anywhere, closed hood passed.
Neon Raised hood, spent 15 min lookin at diagram and system, said 1 hose was plugged in the wrong spot, and failed me.
I guess it just depends if you can confuse the shit outt them enough, it'll pass fine.

To your first question, Yes It is possible to add a EGR valve to the second gen JDM 3s-gte. But if you dont want to go thru the hassle of putting it on and losing some power then just slide the guy a few BILLS I didnt tell you this

slide the guy a few BILLS I didnt tell you thisNope.. It's a felony here in AZ. They have big ass signs at the test site saying this. They also have cameras galore around there, watchin every move the techs make, as well as you.

Yeah.. no.. I'd much rather try to confuse them passively, than actively commit felony bribery of a state agent.
It's not fair.. my buddy can put a real JDM engine in because his car will fall under the magic year. Boo.. (1974 and lower are not subject to visual inspection)
OK. So what do I need to retrofit an EGR system into a JDM 3S-GTE?

Well you would need the EGR system off a US 3S-GTE then you will need to drill about a 7/16" hole in the cylinder head where you can see 2 bolt holes near the corner of the head that nothing bolts to then drill 2 holes in the JDM intake & tap threads for bolts & drill another large 7/16 to 1/2" hole in the intake & purchase gaskets. it's not that hard. you could just bolt the sytem up without drilling the passage holes & it will look completely stock. They do not check it for actual function.

Does it have to be the EGR system off a 3S-GTE? Would one from a GE or FE work instead?

I know someone put a GE head on the GTE block.. **EDIT** Here's a link to some pix.. Dunno if he has the EGR hooked up. But if a GE head fit's on the GTE block, i don't see why you can't get a USDM GE head, and put it on there..

looks like he just used the GE intake manifold. An interesting modification nonetheless.

Yeah, that's just the GE intake manifold.. it keeps intake temps down. (in case you were curious as to the purpose of it).
