I read about different generations of the 3SGE mentioned on this site, but when checking out www.toyotacelicaonline.com/, they have a FAQ which describes all the motors that came in the different generation Celica's, and after the 4th gen., there's no mention of a 3SGE.

i believe that because after the first gen. all 3s-ge's were made in japan so you would have to import or find a 91-95 mr2.

Guess what.. the 1st gen 3S-GE's were made in Japan as well. The North American market never received a car with a 2nd generation 3S-GE in it. The MR2 had one, but in the US, they got the 5S-FE.

The different generations just signify the changes they did to the motor. 1st gen came in the 4th gen celica. 2nd gen came in the 5th gen celicas and gen 1 and 2 SW20 MR2s (JDM). The 3rd gen is from a 6th gen Celica and gen 3 MR2. Gen 4 came in the late MR2s and Altezza in BEAMS form, a blacktop in the Altezza and Redtop in the MR2, the latter is very rare.
All the same for the 3SGTE.

Hey guys, don't have a Celica myself yet, but will be soon getting an 89 GTS coupe from a buddy of mine that sort of runs. I figure I will go through the engine in it and fix it in order to get more familiar with it, then see about picking up another engine to rebuild, and get some serious performance out of. This is gonna be my toy and possibly do some racing in as well. It'll actually be my second Celica, had an 89 ST as my 2nd car, but it got backed into, so I got rid of it.
Anyway, on to my question. Is the 2nd gen 3SGE that much better than the 1st? I found a JDM 2nd gen on EBay for $450, used I think. Is that worth it, or would I be better off just looking for a used 1st Gen 3SGE? It will probably be several months till I'm going to need to find an engine though, since I don't even have the car yet.

If it comes with the wiring harness and ECU, it's a great deal.. if not, you need those two parts for it to work.

The intake and exhaust manifolds flow better, 10.1 compression. Altogether its worth 165 horses, and a lot of good parts companies support this motor. Way better motor than what came in our north american gt-s.

Can a gen 1 be upgraded with parts from a gen 2, or this a different block and/or head?

You can upgrade a gen1 w/ gen2 electronics, and sensors. I'd think you might need something else.. but AFAIK, gen2 stuff should go on a gen1 fine.
