I just cut about 6 inches off the shifter andput an aftermarket knob on there. And the reason? I thought it would look cool

my 3rd gen looks like it has a short-throw.. but really it's just an RX-7 shifter top epoxied to the stock unthreaded "stick". But.. I still have threads.. no ghetto-aftermarket knob for me.

I went to a weld shop.. slipped the guy 20 bucks and he cut it real short and retapped the threads for any aftermarket shifter knob. He also angled my shifter by 10* kind like a HURST shifter angle. Mine also makes the sound clicks klink when it shift between gears example like you hear in the Green Esclipse in the Movie The Fast and The Furious. To bad it blew up.

I might be inclined to go there also. Seems teh 4gc guy's shops/welders are awesome. The exhaust guy Jeremy reccomended was great.

here it is. sorry for the crappy quality, i just used my phone. I ended up taking 2 1/2 in out of the top and putting 3/4in under the ball The bottom welds had to be done twice because the first ones weren't deep enough and then i sprayed it flat black ok not meaning to sound stupid - but can someone please explain what exactly you take off and what exactly you weld back on and where - i cant see any welds on the top part of the shifter lever there - are they not touched at all?? any help would be great cos id like to do this mod ASAP

you cut out a piece from the top part, and weld it into the bottom part. Weld it all together.. and voila.. a custom-made short-throw shifter.
