haha yea i know you might think i am a dummy for wanting to know but when i get my car running right i wanna start making it alittle faster and the specs say my 89 ST has 115 hp stock so i figure i wanna push an extra 30-40 hp out of it possible? and what would i need to do so i just wwanna beat my buddy and the 95 eagle talon he drives, and my buddy with his 95 vtec civic, i know my car is lighter in wieght so thats a start!

I really don't think that there is much except P&P, IHE, and nitrous, but that's going a little radical though.

Your going to have a tough time with the civic. If the Talon is N/A and you have some serious improvements, you might be able to beat it.
An engine swap would be the better and cheaper route to go.

If you like to drive hard the least you could do that would cost you nothing is to advance your valve timing.

You can't advance the valve timing? I don't think there is anything stopping that.. ;p
I agree engines that revv higher benefit more, but there is still some benefit if you revv your engine high?

Yes, you can advance the timing on a 3S-FE. Remember that advancing the timing makes the engine run in a lean(er) condition. You need to use a more 'knock' or detonation resistant fuel, or else the engine will start to detonate. Detonation means that the fuel will explode in the cylinder before the piston reaches TDC. This is bad.
In laymans terms, dont advance it more than 15* (stock is 10*) and run the highest octane level you can in the gas tanks.

I'm not crazy about recommending advanced valve timing, am I? Craig No your not. I thought the same while back. I totally noobed CAMS / vvti with advance timing. Just for that I was noob of the month. I know now. I'm using the highest petro/octane advanced +17 BTDC. Again N/A setup may vary. |

I would say webcam cams, P&P, I,H,E advanced timing & that should get you close to where you want to be.
an easier & probably cheaper route to go would be to send your 3S-FE pistons to JE & have them make you some oversized forged pistons with a higher compression ratio like maybe 11.5 or 12:1 that will get you what you want in one quick shot. you will need to run high octane fuel all the time & adjust your timing so that you have no ping, but it would cost you about $500 for the pistons & probably $250 for machine work & bearings, so for $750 you could have what you want & then from there you could do bolt on mods & add more power.

1mm oversize valves, porting and polishing, mill the head until valve clearance is within .005", a bigger cam, dual valve springs and hardened retainers.....that is easily 30-40hp

Hey guys, first off I don't like street racing, it's just plain stupid, secondly all the power in the world is no good if you can't get it to the ground. Even if you build this killer engine, whats to say it's going to be faster if your car refuses to hookup. Check in to gearing, as the final drive gear makes the most difference on launch, and the gearing in the 3SGE Celicas is more what you need. Also a lower profile tire will lower your final gear ratio a few points, and then theres the clutch, pressure plate, and differental. A really good clutch disk with a higher torque pressure plate and maybe even a limited-slip diff. will let you hook up. As I said before, I don't like street racing, but if I were building a car for straight line stuff, I'd damn sure make it hookup as well as powerful. racerb   |

i would bin the lump and fit a GE or GTE at least. if a GE, i would nitrous it, oops, i have nitroused a GE.
unless you whack fifty ponies of nitrous in it, it would be very very expensive to get another 4Obhp na on a FE.
