3sge motor high performance upgrades (serious)

Hey Everybody Its been a long time sience ive been here just been too busy ha.

Anyway Ive got a new part time job now so im starting to start work on my celica engine. If you dident allready know ive purchesed of a nz site like ebay (trademe) a first gen JDM 3sge motor, the motor has been fully rebuilt and everything is new on it (was fully rebuilt at only 10,000km too ) anyway now I want to start with the power upgrades.

First off I want to port and polish the Head and the manifolds etc the unlock the engine alittle and get it flowing better. I have also grinded away at bits on the moter that have a overhang lip with pieces of metel that slow performance down. The engine has allready been fully rebalanced with the new parts in the block etc and the stock flat top pistions have been re rings and are in mint condition and coated with stuff to make them run better and cooler. But heres the problem even thought I have theses brand new balanced pistons in my new motor I have now see on trademe (ebay type site) High Compression raised top pistons for the first gen 3sge motor. I couldend help but place a bid on them because tey were going for soo cheep ($45 NZ dollors) and I won the auction and purchesed them. So now I also have theses pistions and cant deside waether to take my ellecelent condition re ring blanced flat top pistions out of the block and put theses high compression raised top pistons in??. I say this just because My flat tops are mint but these raied top will give me more power and compression. So I think I will go with the raised top I have purchesed now all i need to no is can I just put my new rings that are on my flat top pistions on to theses raised top high comp ones ?? or do i need to get more new rings lol and then balances these pistions too. I was original just going to use my new flattop pistions and plan the head to raise the compression on the 3sge motor but people have told me the raised top pistions is a better and safer idea as the 3sge allready runs high compression and plaining the head is somewhat a bad idea what do you guys think?? . Anyway thats anough talk about the pistions and compreesion so basical i want to get higher compresion from one of theses way. Ive also just a set of custem Excrators for the new motor and have got the exzaust intake ports macthed.

Another thing ive been thinking about doing is installing an After Market Cam or Ajucting my cams ?? What do you guys think ive heard this can give heep more power ive done probley with at the same time raiseing the engine comprssion. Is there aftermarket cam kits avalible for the motor ??

Basical I need idea so I can get my N/A motor having heeps of power In N/A form any help would be great and please ask if you need more infomation.

One more idea I had in the back of my mind was to put somekind of supercharger onto the motor this is low on my list of idea but im still thinking about it what do you guys think about this on a 3sge JDM first gen??

Hey the easiest way to get power out, would be to bore the engine out like .040 over stock and drop in the .040 pistons. You say you've had it balanced and blueprinted, so port matching would be next, especially on the intake side, to free up some air flow. And yes a custom exhaust header (extractor) is a big help with flow. Also look to see it another model Toyota had a bigger throttle body that could be used, and while your at it soarce bigger injectors, from say a Supra, to boost fuel delivery. Might need to increase fuel pump volume for that last one, but thats a simple fix, Supra pump, and after market pressure regulator. When you've got all this together, then you'll need to make it hook up, so a good high performance clutch set and a limited slip diff. will need to be installed. Check the After Market Mod section in this site, there are several companies listing these peices for our cars.

I would say slap the pistons in with new rings that should give you some good power.
then port & polish, fuel delivery is not so much needed because the factory injectors & pump will be good for the amount of flow you would be flowing NA.

what kind of H/P,will boring .40 over stock give out, would it be wise to put turbo pistons in a N/A?

boring (can we bore that much out of an S block?) will true-up the cylinders. It will make them smooth and round again. It also increases the displacement meaning more air and fuel per combustion. As to how much power, dunno.

I woudln't run turbo pistons unless you plan to turbo your engine.. but that woudln't be an N/A build, now would it.

You can get some custom forged high compression pistons to fit the .040 bore. Port and polish, port match, balance, with stage 1 cams, and you'd be pretty quick.

Hey thanks guys for picking up the slack, I've been in Wilmington NC this weekend, picking up the 300ZX from the body shop. Man did they do a killer job on this thing, can't tell it's the same car, hate to let my wife have it now, even though she did buy it herself.

But I didn't want to give out bad info bought injectors, just used to be the way we boosted performance on our Civics and CRXs, thought it might work on a built Celica as well. Hell we used to run Accord and Prelude injectors in those cars all the time. Theres got to be some crossover of injectors, that will work with a high flow N/A engine, and it's just alittle research away. As for boring .040 over, most engines will take it, but it's not alway needed or wise, cause it's most times max for and engine without sleeving the block.

I was goin to say.. because I know .02 is max on the 22r. I can't imagine the S blocks having thicker walls than the 22r.

Hey thanks for the info, I'll know for sure when I tear mine down for it's first rebuild, for now I'm working on just racing the JDM as is, with just a check of the internals. Could be why Toyota only lists .020 replacement pistons for the 3SGE.

on NA toyota 4 cylinders the single biggest power maker is compression ratio. Up your compression to 10.5:1 & put some cams in it. It pretty hard for your engine to outflow your fuel rail, pump, and injectors NA. You would have to have a crapload of supporting mods before touching the fuel system. When I was building 4A-GE 16 valves there was a real easy formula for power, 10:1 pistons, shave the block .020, Shave the head .035" you have a 185hp 4A-GE, I'm sure most other toyota NA 4 cylinders would have similiar results.

Well, I've got 10.5:1, ported, polished, exhaust, intake, +1mm valves, and I can guarantee you I am nowhere near 185hp.. then again, I'm on a 22re as well.

I still need to drop this cam in.

Sorry, I was recently corrected. The most we can go on the 22re is .06 over. the minimum is .02. I had them mixed up somehow.. heh. .04 should be fine, I would think.

All this talk of high compression and high output engines has made me think of one thing only, high compression means, high octane fuel, that means higher gas prices. Hey guys the regular stuff is already outta site, high octane is nearing three dollars a gallon, so unless you are serious and want to race your cars, stick to the mild upgrades, otherwise you'll need to drag a tanker truck around with you, just to have unlimited supply.
