Thank you all for the replies. A/C Light Flashing - compressor not kicking in "...Everything seemed to be fine - except that when I turn the A/C on while the engine is running the button light flashes and the compressor does not engage (and no change in Revs) and there is no cold air. The local mechanic did some small amount of testing and they think it is a problem with the A/C computer module (not the compressor or pressure valve), but are generally unsure." Couple things can cause this. #1 you still have a leak & it leaked enough freon to trip the low pressure sensor so it does not allow the compressor to kick on. #2 the speed sensor in the AC compressor has gone out or is not plugged in. #3 Your expansion valve is clogged or no good, & is causing low pressure on the pressure switch side. (kinda unlikely, but I have seen it b4) #4 the AC amplifier or computer circuit (pretty unlikely)

make sure your climate control panel works cause my dad fixed his a/c problems by replacing that and a blown fuse

Thanks Jeremy
#1 The A/C system was just regassed (with r134a) - on the same day - within the same hour as problem arose. So it shouldn't be a low pressure problem.
#2 The A/C Compressor appears to be fully plugged in (and electrical contacts cleaned). The compressor (and everything) was working on donar vehicle - so should be working. However, if not, how could I test this" I heard connecting single wire on compressor to "+" terminal of battery - good idea?
#3 Can this only be tested by replacing the pressure valve?
#4 I suppose I could test this by putting in a working A/C amplifier from a similar celica.
CeliBlue: I don't have a climate control panel like the one you are referring to (no solder connections - only plug/socket connection, which I've checked over).

I stand corrected. I've been licenced for about 6 years now. I have a class 4 universal. I "thought" R12 was no longer produced, except maybe Mexico. Now I know.

Someone suggested to me that perhaps the original ECU in my car is not compatiable with A/C. I find this hard to believe, Toyota surely wouldn't do it that way - every other piece of wiring/plug/slot was in the car ready for A/C.

The auto/manual ECU's are the same, and I doubt that Toyota would have changed that based on something like A/C. Interestingly enough, my GT has the EXACT same problem. Since it's winter, I haven't tried to fix it. The only thing that I have left to check is the passenger's side kick panel fuse though.

The fuse is the first thing I checked
If the dash light is flashing, it would indicate the fuse is fine. I haven't checked if that is true.

Yep - if the fuse goes, no more flashing light.
Yeah - I'm making next to no progress..
