Is there anyway to make a 4age fit in a 4th gen? I take it the a series engines dont mate up with the s series trannys...

Nope, the trannys are different. I'm not sure if the 5th gen AT180(4A-FE powered ST) had the same engine mount locations on the body as the ST182 and ST185(which are the same as the 4th gen) I say this cause if they are the same you could buy a tranny and motor mounts from a AT-180, bolt them to the 4A of your choice and place it into your 4th gen. If the engine mounts are not the same, you would have to do some fab work to get it to fit. Of course there is some wiring and plumbing to do. Try and research the JDM only 4A-GE powered 4th gen. I have seen a '87 Celica brochure online that clearly showed a 4A powered 4gc. Hope this was some help.

an RWD 4g would be one hell of a car...but thats out of the realm of what can be done in a normal home garage. Heh.

MAybe its just me but has everyone noticed toyota led the way in the 80's with engine making for imports. look at them they made legendary powerplanst that are still used today or have led to bigger upgrades. 22R, 4age, 3sge,3sgte, i dunno, i ramble im sorry ;D

I do believe in Australia and Europe the 4gs were known as the T16 probably an abbreviation from ST160. Same with the Corollas. They had E10 in place of AE100 as opposed to the North American AE101/AE102.
I'd like to see how a 4age will perform in a celica. Had the impression it will not be as beneficial judging by body weight differences. The 4ages were off corollas(85-92) and those were really light cars. The 20vs were off the japanese Levins, Marinos and Celes which would have made it a better hp/weight ratio for the 4gs i guess.
Mm...
